An oil company is drilling in a small town and suddenly they face volcanic eruption. This seems a small event at first sight but soon it becomes clear that it is the start of a long chain of eruptions. In the movie we see people rushing to save their lives and gradually it becomes a global phenomena that has ability to enfulf the whole globe。故事发生在1694年的英国，家财万贯的郝博特夫人（珍妮特·苏兹曼 Janet Suzman 饰）雇佣了天才画师奈维尔（安东尼·希金斯 Anthony Higgins 饰），根据合同，后者需要替郝博特夫人所在的康普顿安斯庄园完成十二幅画作。在此期间，奈维尔和郝博特夫人之间产生了不伦的关系。 塔耳曼（休·弗拉瑟 Hugh Fraser 饰）是郝博特夫人的女婿，他一直希望能够得到堂皇富丽的康普顿安斯庄园，然而他的妻子塔耳曼太太（安·路易斯·兰伯特 Anne-Louise Lambert 饰）却一直没有子嗣，这令塔耳曼将在庄园中横行的奈维尔视作眼中钉。很快，奈维尔的情人名单里添上了塔耳曼太太的名字，此时的他并不知道的是，自己已经陷入了一个筹划已久的阴谋之中。。
