Greece, in the 1920's, is occupied by the Turks. The country is in turmoil with entire villages uprooted. The site of the movie is a Greek village that conducts a passion play each year. The leading citizens of the town, under the auspices of the Patriarch, choose those that will play the parts in the Passion. A stuttering shepherd is chosen to play Jesus. The town butcher (who wanted to be Jesus) is chosen as Judas. The town prostitute is chosen as Mary Magdalene. The rest of the disciples are also chosen. As the movie unfolds, the Passion Play becomes a reality. A group of villagers, uprooted by the war and impoverished, arrive at the village led by their priest. The wealthier citizens of the town want nothing with these people and manipulate a massacre. In the context of the 1920's each of the characters plays out their biblical role in actuality.。杨桂花的丈夫孙有为原是村里的主任，在城里的包工头刘本好的儿子刘运来的怂恿下，给桂花留了张纸条就进城打工去了，村主任的位置就空了出来。村民王胡、胡胜等人觊觎村主任的位置，选举时使出浑身解数没能成功，却被杨桂花阴错阳差地当上了主任。杨桂花为了让村里富裕起来，尽心尽力地为村里找项目，镇长被她执著的精神感动，终于答应把手头上的项目交给杨桂花做。项目的实施过程困难重重，胡胜等人经常从中破坏，挑拨桂花和大家的关系，丈夫孙有为也不支持杨桂花，还提出了离婚，这些都被杨桂花一一化解，这其中也闹出很多笑料。在杨桂花的努力下，村里终于开起了工厂。工厂开业那天，女人收拾一新，聚在村头敲锣打鼓迎接着来厂工作的外地工人，没想到远道而来的工人竟然是自己的男人。村里的女人们终于等到男人为自己打工的一天……。昆丹小时候玩闹时，无意间瞥见正在祷告的佐娅，从此便一见钟情。可是爱情的道路从来不会一帆风顺。青梅竹马的阻挠，信仰的不同，家庭的反对，世俗的偏见，佐娅的动摇，甚至还有其他更大的阴谋。。。坤丹何去何从，他能真正得到爱情么？ 本片是一部印度宝莱坞爱情喜剧，与其同题材的印度电影还有《巴菲的奇妙命运》、《贫民窟的百万富翁》等等，鲜丽的色彩，动人的音乐，漂亮的女主角，曲折离奇的剧情都是本片的看点。本片配乐由印度著名音乐大师A.R. Rahman原创制作，其代表作有《贫民窟的百万富翁》《127小时》《宝莱坞机器人之恋》等等。
